Prologue: Backfire

“Commander Actnon, sir,” said the soldier in front of him, “they have broken through our defenses, we must retreat.”
“I will say when to retreat.  It's time to pull out our secret weapon.”  He handed a device to the soldier.  “Here, attach this to a grenade.  It will affect us both, but at least they won't win.”
    “Yes, sir.”
The soldier walked off with their last resort.  When he was close enough, he threw the grenade at the enemy.  There was a giant explosion.  It lasted a full minute before fading into smoke.  Actnon heard a sound like the transporters in Star Trek, but he had no idea where it came from.
Actnon started feeling around, but when he saw his hands, he yelped like a Who.  They weren't human hands.  They were bunny paws.  He had turned into a giant walking bunny.  He had no idea what to do now, so he did the thing any sensible person would do.  He fainted.  Everyone else on the battlefield must have been sensible people as well, for within 30 seconds they had all fainted or even died.

Cyklee walked through the cave, wondering where the quack he was.  He pointed his flashlight everywhere, but nothing looked familiar.  It was pitch black everywhere except where he shone his flashlight, thus he was unaware of the vines creeping up on him from above.
There was a sound like wind, and a second later his flashlight clattered on the cave floor.  He yelled and struggled, be he couldn't escape.  He tried to pull out his knife, but it was too late.  The vines had taken his body.  These vines weren't ordinary plant life, they had been waiting, waiting for a host whose body they could take.
These vines could not hold the body under their control for more than a day unless it was weakened greatly.  They had used their last victim to start creating a robot to help suck the life force from the body.  Now they could finally finish it.  They labored hard all day until the robot was finally finished.  Then they turned it on.
“Now I shall have no more need of you,” said the vines maliciously through the host as the robot sucked his life from him.  The robot understood this, and it kept the life it had taken inside of itself.  It went out of the cave, but it had already done enough damage.  The vines now had a body to control forever.
Yes, this story is in fact futuristic.  By the dawn of the next day the robot had ravaged a deadly laser and a laser sword.  It was walking along when it came upon a very strange sight.  There were big rabbits on one side battling assorted walking animals on the other.
Now this robot had been made with rather long “ears,” so it figured tat the rabbits were its kindred.  It went into the battle and before long the rabbits had forced the enemy to retreat.  Alas, the robot had become fond of having a living part inside of itself so, when they were celebrating their victory, it sucked the life out of the youngest rabbit there.
Then it fled the area and went to find the other team.  It was easy enough to follow the tracks, but it took quite some time.  It's a good thing the robot was part living, for it could now take energy from plants and animals since it was night and it could therefore not get solar energy.  It soon found itself face to face with a walking armadillo.
